Technical Resources

What can researchers do?

Researchers can use scientific evidence to influence policy by getting it into the hands of decision makers. In order to inform health policy, decision makers need data on disease burden, intervention impact, safety and cost effectiveness. To support these efforts, the ROTA Council provides recommendations for key stakeholders, reports and guidelines from scientific bodies, and speaker presentations from technical symposiums.

Recommendations and Guidelines

ROTA Council Recommendations

By ROTA Council, 2015
To accelerate the introduction of life-saving, health-improving rotavirus vaccines, the ROTA Council recommends key stakeholders – in countries where these vaccines have not yet been introduced – undertake specific actions.

Science, surveillance, and safety: A review of evidence and recommendations for future research priorities in low and middle income countries.

Rotavirus Vaccine Recommendations

By Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
The ACIP provides advice and guidance to the Director of the CDC regarding use of vaccines and related agents for control of vaccine-preventable diseases in the civilian population of the United States.

Updated Position Paper on Rotavirus Vaccines

This paper summarizes recent developments in the field, in particular the potential of rotavirus vaccines to further reduce mortality by employing more flexible immunization schedules. All WHO recommendations appear at the end of this paper and reflect those offered by SAGE.

Weekly Epidemiological Record: Safety Profile on ROTAVAC®

The Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS) provides independent, scientifically rigorous advice on vaccine safety issues of potential global importance. This document describes the safety profile of the live attenuated rotavirus vaccine Rotavac®.

Weekly Epidemiological Record: Recommendation on Rotavirus Immunization Schedules

SAGE reviewed new evidence that afforded an opportunity to avert additional deaths from rotavirus disease. SAGE continues to recommend that the first dose of rotavirus vaccine be administered along with DTP, as soon as possible after 6 weeks of age as this maximizes disease protection.

Generic protocol for monitoring impact of rotavirus vaccination on gastroenteritis disease burden and viral strains

This generic protocol outlines a uniform approach to monitoring the impact of rotavirus vaccines that can be modified by countries to meet their specific needs. The primary overall objectives of this protocol are to determine vaccine impact, determine, vaccine effectiveness and to monitor for possible changing strain patterns in vaccinated populations.

Guidelines for estimating the economic burden of diarrhoeal disease, with focus on assessing the costs of rotavirus diarrhoea

The objective of these guidelines is to present a method for determining the costs associated with diarrheal disease in children under five years of age. Methods for estimating the costs from the viewpoint of the health sector and for society as a whole are explained.

Pneumonia and Diarrhea Progress Report

Rotavirus Vaccine Cost Calculator

By Path
The PATH team created a simple, Excel-based tool for assessing and comparing costs of rotavirus vaccination programs annually and for a period of 10 years with each rotavirus vaccine product available in the global market. It aims to help country-level policymakers compare products and estimate vaccination program costs for different rotavirus vaccines, exploring up to six different vaccine options at a time. This tool can be used by decision-makers, implementers, technical partners, and others in any country, whether or not the country is eligible for co-funding from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

Vaccine Information and Epidemiology Window hub

By International Vaccine Access Center
VIEW-hub—an online, interactive vaccine information tool—allows users to instantly visualize data about vaccine introductions, product usage, dosing schedules, access, coverage, and more for a number of vaccines. Custom queries and maps, exportable data and graphics, and a map gallery are just some of the interactive features users can access. IVAC publishes quarterly reports on Global Vaccine Introduction and Implementation from VIEW-hub.

Vaccine Product, Price and Procurement Database

The V3P database is a web-based platform that countries can use to collect, collate, and share vaccine price and procurement information. As much as possible, the V3P database attempts to present data that is comparable between countries. The database includes publicly accessible information from WHO, UNICEF and the PAHO revolving fund as well as information from participating countries.

The Vaccine Resource Library

The library gathers top immunization resources in a single website and offers high-quality, scientifically accurate materials on specific diseases and topics in immunization addressed by PATH’s work. The database can be filtered to specific parameters.
